Margaret, Chen Zhu – Senior Consultant

Ms Chen is a Senior Consultant of Fred Kan & Co and is qualified as a solicitor in Hong Kong as well as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand.

Ms Chen was born in Beijing and migrated to New Zealand at the age of 6 and speaks and reads fluent Mandarin and English. Ms Chen completed her Conjoint Bachelor degrees in Law and Psychology at the University of Auckland and later received her Master of Laws in Dispute Resolution and Arbitration from the City University of Hong Kong with distinction, graduating top in her year.

Ms Chen specializes in dispute resolution, particularly litigation, arbitration, and mediation. Ms Chen’s non-contentious practice also includes commercial structuring, matrimonial agreements and asset and estate planning.

Ms Chen has a particular passion for family and civil matters. Ms Chen advises on divorce and all associated matters in Hong Kong and New Zealand, and works closely together with registered foreign lawyers within the firm to also advise on divorce matters in mainland China. Ms Chen also advises frequently on corporate issues, shareholder disputes and cross-border debt recovery and regularly appears in Court for clients.

Between 2022 and 2024, Ms Chen was the New Zealand ambassador for the YMG of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb), where she remains a fellow. Ms Chen is also a fellow of the Arbitrators and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand (AMINZ) and an accredited mediator with Hong Kong Mediators Accreditation Association Limited (HKMAAL).

In 2021, Ms Chen assisted Professor Liu Qiao (professor and joint editor-in-chief of The Chinese Journal of Comparative Law, Oxford University Press) in conducting research and translation of the publication on the Revised Chinese Contract Law following the implementation of the Civil Code and impact of COVID-19.

Ms Chen was a part-time lecturer at the University of Auckland and Unitec Institute of Technology, lecturing on Company Law and the Law on Business Obligations between 2017 and 2020.

Ms Chen is also a Director of Nolen Walters, a New Zealand specialist boutique firm and has over 14 years practicing experience in New Zealand, leading its Asian practice and cross-border matters.
